Former US Marine Corps AV-8A/B pilot Art Nalls became the first ever V/STOL fighter owner/pilot on November 10, when he took off in his BAe Sea Harrier, XZ439/N94422, from St Marys County Airport in Maryland, USA.
Unfortunately a subsequent flight resulted in a less than graceful return to earth when the Sea Harrier's forward undercarriage and starboard stabiliser collapsed on landing. Damage to the aircraft is reported as being restricted to "...abrasions to the radome and some minor skin damage". The cause of the incident has been identified and tests are under way to determine whether the engine was effected.
In a recent email Art Nalls told aeroplanemonthly.com that whilst sourcing or repairing the hydraulic pump (which is believed to have been at the source of the problem) might be challenging, all other parts required to complete repairs were on order, and that the aircraft will be flying again soon.
